Fixing perspectives

Many photos of buildings need more than straightening. They are distorted and you can fix the perspective distortion really fast with Photoshop.

In Photoshop, go to File and then click Open. You can browse for the required file and click Ok.

The next step is that you will require a grid. Go to View and in the menu click Show and choose Grid option. After this, you will notice a grid on your image; it is there only as an aid.  In the Layer’s Palette, go to Layer and click Duplicate Layer. This step is only to keep a back up copy of the image.

Press Ctrl +T and Transform tool will be activated. Now the picture will have selection line around it and will have selection handles (square boxes) in 4 corners and 4 sides. Select anyone of the top selection handles and while holding Ctrl, Shift, Alt key on the keyboard, drag the handle outwards. Keep adjusting, while looking at the grid so that building in picture matches the vertical edges of the grid. After you have fixed the tilt, the picture will look short. To confirm whether it is an illusion or not, you can change the Opacity to 50% in the layers palette. By comparing the background layer and duplicate layer, you can see the image has shortened and you will need to correct that.

To do that, we will have to get the Transform tool again by pressing Ctrl +T. With the opacity still at 50% you can compare the height of the building in the two layers. Select top middle joint from the transform tool and move it up so that the height of two buildings in two layers are equal. Once you have done it, you can change the opacity to 100%.

The final result will have the building with top and bottom width exactly same. The building in the image will be of the same height as the original.
